Multiple social media users and local media reports said that a shooting has taken place at a youth fair in Miami-Dade County. However, the Miami-Dade Police confirmed that reports of a shooting that spread like wildfire on Twitter were not true.

We are aware of reports of an incident at @miamiyouthfair. There is no credibility to these reports or threats to public safety. As always, we remind our residents to remain vigilant. If you see something, say something. For emergencies dial 9-1-1 immediately,” they tweeted. 

As a result of the false reports, panic ensued Saturday night at the youth fair, sparking a stampede that left multiple people with minor injuries. It also prompted a large police presence.

Several social media users said that they were at the fair and heard shots. “There was a shooting at the Miami fair. I was there with friends. We saw people running. There were gunshots by the time we were out. We’re safe. I’m mildly injured. Cops everywhere. Ubering home. I’m safe. We’re safe,” one Twitter user, who was at the scene, said. “why do people gotta ruin shit with guns. shooting down at miami youth fair people running out and crying,” a Twitter user said.

“Why y’all shooting at the fair? I swear ppl in Miami can’t have regular fun,” another one added.

“It won’t be about that tomorrow. It’s gonna be all about shooting. Miami don’t care about bigs. There game plan is not in the paint,” a third one said on Twitter.

Initially, there were reports that multiple law enforcement agencies were investigating the incident at University park. Reports also said multiple shots were fired at the Fair Expo Center located at 10901 SW 24th St, Miami, Florida.

“At the time of this reports, law enforcement agencies has not specified if this is an active shooter incident or a random shots fired. Unconfirmed reports alleged that multiple persons has been injured as a suspect fired shots following an altercations at the Youth Fair,” the report further added.

One Twitter user said that a child is missing after the shooting.

“9 year old Aiden, white shirt, grey paints with paint. Black male, purple and gold beaded necklace. He is safe with a Miami Dade Police Officer. // Miami Dade Youth Fair Shooting Lost Child. Please tell me he got home safe.”

There was no information on injuries, victims, and the suspect as of yet. However, the police later mentioned that a group of kids began running at the fair site, causing other people to be alarmed.

As a result of the false reports, a large number of first responders were dispatched to the scene. It’s unclear how many people were hurt. “All reports of an incident at the Dade County Youth Fair have been deemed unfounded,” police told NBC 6. “There are no threats to public safety.”
