Phoenix Suns hired former NBA champion Frank Vogel as a new coach on Friday. Vogel will be replacing Monty Williams.

The Phoenix Suns decided to terminate Williams on May 13 despite Williams having four excellent seasons, which included an NBA Finals participation in 2021 and a Coach of the Year award in 2022. Williams had made substantial contributions to the club, but the Suns also had two consecutive postseason exits that were disappointing and defined by large deficits, including being down by 30 points at the half of elimination games played on their home court. As a result, the Suns have now shown their faith in Vogel.

Vogel has coached for the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, and Los Angeles Lakers as the 49-year-old has a long and distinguished coaching career. He will now play for the Phoenix Suns, where he will attempt to lead the team to its first NBA title in its 55-year history.
The contract between Frank Vogel and the Phoenix Suns is reportedly long-term and for an estimated $31 million for a 5-year contract. When Vogel led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA title in 2020, it was clear that he was an accomplished coach who could lead a team to victory on the biggest stage.

New Suns have seen a lot of shaking up recently with the arrival of new owner Mat Ishbia, who has been vocal and expressional both about his opinions of the game. As one can anticipate the decisions come in quick succession, like adding 13-time All-Star Kevin Durant in a trade deadline deal or hiring Vogel.

The Phoenix Suns will have little room for flexibility in the upcoming season, making it difficult for them to make big personnel adjustments.
