Skipper Khadija Shaw received a red card in Jamaica’s solid performance against a strong French team at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Sunday. The Group F fixture saw the two teams canceling each other out in a 0-0 draw.

The forward received her second yellow card in the 92nd minute after she caught France’s Renard with a reckless challenge and left the referee with no choice but to send her off. She had received her first yellow in the 37th minute after she had tackled Karchaoui on the boot.

Who is Khadija Shaw?

Khadija Monifa “Bunny” Shaw OD is a forward for the Women’s Super League team Manchester City and the Jamaica women’s national team. She is the top goal scorer in Jamaican history.

Shaw was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, to poultry farmer Monica Shaw and shoemaker George Shaw. Out of 13 brothers and sisters, she was the youngest. Shaw’s brother gave her the moniker “Bunny” because of her early love for carrots. She went to St. Jago High School for her high school education.

Shaw received his first call-up for the Jamaica U15s team when she was 13 years old. She received scholarship offers from Eastern Florida State College and Navarro College in Texas while competing for Jamaica. The University of Tennessee then noticed her. She earned a communication degree from the University of Tennessee.

Shaw has represented the country at the U-15, U-17, U-20, and senior levels.

On August 23, 2015, Shaw played in her first senior international match, scoring twice in a 6-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in an Olympic qualification match. Shaw was a member of the Jamaican side that earned a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019. As a result, they became the first country from the Caribbean to ever reach the Women’s World Cup.
