David Montgomery, who had a productive outing in the Detroit Lions’ season-opening win against the Kansas City Chiefs and was having a strong start in Week 2, unfortunately suffered an injury during the game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The incident occurred in the third quarter when Montgomery appeared to injure his right leg while making a catch. He was visibly in pain and had to be assisted to the Lions’ bench, unable to put much weight on his injured leg.

Detroit’s medical staff attended to Montgomery’s right knee, ultimately wrapping it, and he was subsequently carted off to the locker room. As of now, there is no official update from Detroit regarding Montgomery’s condition.

Before his injury, Montgomery had carried the ball 16 times for 67 yards and had scored a touchdown. With the veteran running back out of the game, the Lions will turn to their first-round rookie, Jahmyr Gibbs, to handle their backfield responsibilities.

David Montgomery, aged 26, had spent the first four seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears before signing a three-year, $18 million contract with the Detroit Lions in the offseason.

Montgomery’s injury occurred during a sideline reception in the second quarter, where he appeared to twist his leg. Despite getting up and limping to the sideline initially, Montgomery eventually needed medical attention while lying on his back.

In Montgomery’s absence, Jahmyr Gibbs took over as the primary running back on every subsequent snap. If Montgomery’s injury results in missed playing time, it’s likely that Craig Reynolds will also see some action, but the bulk of the workload will likely fall on Gibbs, who is expected to see a significant increase in playing time as long as Montgomery is sidelined.
