South African rugby player Hannes Strydom, who was instrumental in the historic 1995 World Cup victory for the Springboks, died in a car accident at the age of 58.

Strydom was an important part of the team that won the World Cup by defeating New Zealand in the final. His accomplishments were prominently shown in the 2009 Hollywood production Invictus. The victory, occurring just a year after the end of apartheid in South Africa, holds immense historical significance.

As a second-row player, Strydom is acknowledged for his accomplishments and is regarded as “one of the great locks of his generation.” His tragic passing in the Sunday night vehicle accident is the fifth setback for the original Springboks squad that defeated the All Blacks 15–12 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Strydom was acknowledged for his physicality and ability to win lineouts, and he was well-known for his intimidating presence as a lock forward. His substantial contributions culminated in the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory for the Springboks, an important turning point in the team’s history.
