The Delhi Police has registered 22 FIRs so far in connection with the violence that broke out during the farmers’ tractor parade in the national capital leaving over 300 policemen injured on Tuesday. As a precautionary measure, the police have also tightened security at several spots across the city.
According to media reports, the home ministry is expected to deploy additional paramilitary troops. The exact number of paramilitary personnel that will be deployed is not known yet, but it is expected to be around 1,500 to 2,000.
Nearly 6,000 to 7,000 tractors assembled at the Singhu border on Tuesday around 8.30am, police said. The police had permitted the farmers to carry out the tractor rally on a designated route. But the farmers began the rally earlier than the decided time and took a different route insisting upon going towards Central Delhi.
Similar scenes were witness at other border points of Delhi. The farmers broke through police barricades and congregated at ITO.
A large group of farmers, who had come from Singhu and Gazipur borders, attempted to move towards Lutyens’ Delhi from the ITO. Some of them turned violent when the police tried to stop them. The violent protesters tried to run over the policemen, damaged iron grills and broke barricades, the police said in a statement on Wednesday.
However, police personnel succeeded in stopping them from entering Lutyens’ Delhi.
Meanwhile, some farmers also indulged in vandalism and attacked policemen. Later, they changed their plans and moved towards Red Fort, it had said.
At Red Fort, they broke the gates and entered its wells. A section of the crowd also managed to climb atop the rampart of the Red Fort where they hoisted their religious flag, the statement had said.
A Delhi official said multiple videos and CCTV footage are being scanned to identify farmers involved in the violence on Tuesday and that strict action will be taken against the culprits.
