Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been sacked by Manchester United. The club made the announcement on Sunday and thanked Ole for “his tireless efforts as Manager.” His fate was sealed at a board meeting on Saturday night following the team’s 4-1 defeat at Watford.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success,” the club said in a statement. 

Manchester United confirmed that Michael Carrick will take charge of the team for upcoming games, while they look to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.

Solskjær was named the caretaker manager of the team on December 19, 2018, a day after José Mourinho was sacked. In March the following year, after winning 14 out of 19 games, Solskjær signed a three-year deal as permanent manager of the club. 

On July 4, 2021, Solskjær signed a three-year contract extension. On September 18, the team won 2-1 at West Ham to set a record for being unbeaten in 29 Premier League away games. On October 24, the team lost 5-0 to Liverpool at home following which Solskjær called it his “darkest day” as a manager.

“But I have come too far to give up. I am not built that way. This is the lowest I have been but I accept the responsibility, that is mine and mine going forward,” he said. 

Pressure built again after the team’s 2-0 loss in the Manchester derby on November 6. Two weeks later United lost 4-1 to Watford.

“It is difficult to explain. We are in a very bad moment. We have a lack of momentum and we are in a very bad period … But I believe in my staff, my players and myself,” Solskjær said after the loss.
