The literacy rate of any country is a vital factor that determines its social and economic growth potential. For a developing nation like India, it is paramount for most individuals to attain education in order to lead the country to a certain level that we collectively dream of. The National Survey of India published a report on ‘Household Social Consumption: Education in India’ in the 75th round.

The report ranks states on their rate of literacy. The highest literacy rate was achieved by Kerala, while the lowest rate went to Andhra Pradesh. But before we dive deeper into that, let us discuss a few facts about literacy in India.

India amounts to 37% of the global total of illiterate adults with its population of 287 million illiterate individuals. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand make up for those lowest in literacy rate among Dalits in India. Furthermore, it is impressive that India’s literacy rate has increased over six times since independence. However, it is still a bummer that it ranks at 123 out of 135 countries in female literacy rate. Well, there are ways to boost literacy rate in a country. Only time will tell whether we adopt them and work on increasing it.

Below, for your reference, is the literacy rate in a few major states of India.

KERALA

Kerala, like every time, is at the top with 96.2% literacy rate. According to the 2011 census, almost 96.11 percent of males and 92.07 females were literate in the state.
