The Premier League game between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday was briefly suspended over a medical emergency in the crowd. A supporter at the St James’ Park required medical attention during the first half of the encounter, causing the game to be briefly halted in the 41st minute.

Spurs players Sergio Reguilon and Eric Dier were the first ones to alert the officials about the emergency, with Sky Sports reporting the Spanish full-back asked referee Andre Marriner to stop the game after the incident unfolded in the stands.

Newcastle’s club doctor Paul Catterson along with other medical staff rushed to the stand carrying a defibrillator and a stretcher. Marriner then brought the players off the pitch as play was briefly suspended.

The concerned supporter was escorted out of the stadium and rused to a hospital. Newcastle confirmed on Twitter his condition was stable.

Seven minutes were added to the half, which resumed following a three-minute warm up after the players re-entered the pitch.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane ended an unprecedented goal-drought in years by scoring his first Premier League goal of the season to complete a Spurs comeback against the Magpies.

Playing their first game since the high-profile Saudi-backed takeover, Callum Wilson’s thumping, close-range header from a Javier Manquillo cross blew the roof off an already rocking St James’ Park in just the second minute.

Spurs rallied with two quick goals as Tanguy Ndombele’s curling effort flew past Karl Darlow in the Newcastle goal from just inside the penalty box in the 17th minute to restore parity. This was followed by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg releasing Kane through on goal with a chipped pass, with the England striker lobbing his effort over an onrushing Darlow to complete the comeback.

Son Hueng-Min then scored in the third minute of first half injury time to double Spurs advantage going into the interval.

The second half saw a flurry of cards for the Steve Bruce’s side, with Ciaran Clark, Issac Hayden, Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvy – who was sent off for two yellow card offenses within 5 minutes – all entering the book.

An 89th-minute own-goal from Dier sparked a nervous finish to the game for Spurs, Nuno Esperito Santo’s side held on for their fifth win of the season.
