ICC U-19 World Cup-winning captain of India Yash Dhull
got off to a flying start in his first-class career. Making his debut for Delhi
in Ranji Trophy, the 19-year-old registered a century just after the lunch
break on Day 1 of the four-day match against Tamil Nadu at the ACA Stadium in
Baraspara on Thursday. The opening batter scored 113 off 150 balls.

With this magnificent knock in his graduation to the
senior level cricket, Dhull joined an exclusive league of Indian cricketers,
who scored a ton on their Ranji Trophy debut. The list is comprised of
legendary names like Sachin Tendulkar, domestic cricket stalwart Amon Mujumdar
and Rohit Sharma.
In his very first match in red-ball cricket, Dhull
showed a sign of a great batter. When Delhi kept losing wickets on a surface
where bowlers were getting aid from dew, Dhull stood tall for his side, playing
the innings like an experienced pro. As wickets were tumbling in quick
succession, Dhull stuck to the ground shots and hit 18 boundaries while
maintaining an impressive strike rate of 75.33.

Delhi were reduced to 7/2 before Dhull and Nitish
stitched a 60-run partnership. M Mohammed broke the partnership but Dhull
continued to put on runs on the scoreboard for Delhi. He reached his half-century off
just 57 balls and was joined by Jonty Sidhu (71) as both took the innings
forward. Tamil Nadu, however, almost blocked Dhull’s chance of scoring the ton. The
batter was on 97 when he got a reprieve as the umpire called the delivery
no-ball.

Meanwhile, this is the fifth time India’s U-19 captain
had hit a century on their First-Class debut. Vijay Zol had scored 110 against
New Zealand A in 2013, followed by Prithvi Shaw’s knock of 120 against Tamil
Nadu in 2017. The following year, Priyam Garg had scored 117 against Goa before
Dhull was included in the list. The Delhi batter was eventually out for 113,
out LBW by Mohammed.
