Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, has been all over the Internet for his seemingly strong love for everything desi. Well, this time Alex has tried vada pav.
Ellis is currently in Maharashtra to meet top government officials and it is safe to say that the pomp and fervour during Ganesh Chaturthi got him into a festive mood. So much so that Ellis tasted Mumbai’s iconic street food and we’re all for it.
The diplomat took to social media to share a photograph of him with the Gateway of India in the background. “There’s always time to have a vadapav in Mumbai,” he wrote online, adding, ‘lai bhaari’ in Maharashtrian style, meaning excellent.
Alex was earlier suggested to eat dosa without knife and fork. The diplomat seems to have taken the advice sincerely as he can be seen eating the Indian cuisine by hand.
However, many commented on the post that he should be trying the snack at a local shop to best enjoy the taste of it, as opposed to eating it at a high-end luxury hotel.

Following the post, US Consulate Mumbai asked him to join US Consul General Ranz at Aaswad. Aaswad is a popular restaurant known “for the best Maharashtrian street food in town”.
Alex Ellis also met Mumbai’s famous dabbawalas during his exploration. He was given the signature multi-tier tiffin box as a gift by the delivery personnel, of which he shared a picture.
Alex Ellis has been taking the internet by storm lately with his candid approach as he explores various parts of India and learns various languages. The diplomat had even shared a video in which he talks in Hindi after meeting UP CM Yogi Adityanath earlier. It doesn’t stop there. He teamed up with Rahul Dravid to learn Kannada for friendly banter during the India vs England series.
