Otoniel “Tony” Navarrete, who was reportedly arrested on Thursday for charges of sexual conduct with a minor, serves as State Senator for Arizona‘s 30th district and has been part of the state’s legislative processes since 2016.

Navarrete was raised in the town of West Phoenix and attended two separate schools in Arizona. He went to Carl Hayden Community High School and Isaac School District and went on to graduate from Arizona State University, according to the state senator’s official website.

Navarrete, who is a member of the Democratic party in the United States, participates in multiple Senate committees of Arizona including Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee, Health and Human Services and is also an active and ranking member of commerce.

After joining the state legislative processes in 2016, Navarrete has backed more than 100 bills that “focus on strengthening education, expanding access to voting, promoting small businesses, tax accountability”, according to the state senator’s official website.

The Phoenix Police Department, on Friday, said that Navarrete faces three counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one count of molestation of a minor.

Friday’s statement said that the police department “received a report of sexual conduct with a minor that occurred in 2019. Detectives interviewed a juvenile victim and witnesses, and on August 5th, developed probable cause to arrest the suspect. The suspect was arrested and is currently in the process of being booked into jail for multiple counts of sexual conduct with a minor, among other charges”, according to reports from US media.

The news comes about two days after the state Senator announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19 even though he had been vaccinated against the disease. In a statement, the Senator said he had been isolating at home as he was experiencing mild symptoms, according to reports.
