Photo-sharing application Instagram has on Tuesday rolled out a new feature that allows users to adjust how tightly they want to filter out sexually suggestive or violent posts. The feature, called ‘Sensitive Content Control’ gives the user control over the kind of content they want to consume while using the social media site.

The option lets people adjust whether they want to see more or fewer posts that some may find unpleasant or untasteful, Instagram said in a blog post.

“You can think of sensitive content as posts that don’t necessarily break our rules, but could potentially be upsetting to some people – such as posts that may be sexually suggestive or violent,” the Instagram team said.

The new feature is an add-on to an already existing exploration tool. The exploration tool on the image-centric social network recommends users content that they might find interesting.

People can stick with the default limit on sensitive posts, or opt to tighten or loosen the restriction.

“One exception to this: the Allow option will not be available to people under 18,” Instagram said.

The filtering option comes at a time when social networks are under pressure to thwart abusive or misleading posts while allowing people to freely express themselves.

Here is how you can use the ‘Sensitive Content Control’ feature on Instagram:

– Login to your profile.

– Tap on the Settings tab on the upper-right corner.

– Select the option ‘Account’.

– Tap on Sensitive Content Control.

– You can keep the setting at its default state by selecting the ‘Limit’ Option. Or to see more, check ‘Allow’ and to see less of some types of sensitive content, select the ‘Limit Even More’ option.

– You can change your selection at any time.

– The option will not be available to users who are under 18.
