Pat Carroll was an American comedian and actor. She was best known for her portrayal of Ursula in The Little Mermaid, but she also had a lengthy acting career, having appeared in CBS’s The Danny Thomas Show, ABC’s Laverne & Shirley, NBC’s ER, and some other guest-starring and series-regular roles on American television, along with voice-acting in numerous cartoon series. Carroll received an Emmy, a Drama Desk Award, a Grammy Award, and a Tony Award nomination.

Carroll died of pneumonia at the age of 95 on July 30, 2022, at her residence on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The actor is survived by daughters Kerry Karsian and Tara Karsian, as well as his granddaughter Evan Karsian-McCormick.

My Neighbor Totoro (2005) – Granny

My Neighbor Totoro is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten. The film—which stars the voice actors Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, and Hitoshi Takagi—tells the story of a professor’s two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei) and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan.

Granny is a character from the film. She owns the house that the Kusakabes move into. She tells Mei and Satsuki that they can call her Granny. In the Streamline dub, she is known as Nanny and is voiced by Carroll.

A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures (2010) – Old Female Turtle

A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures (internationally titled Sammy’s Adventures: The Secret Passage) is a 2010 English-language Belgian-French 3D computer-animated children’s film created and directed by Ben Stassen. The film was released in California on June 6, 2010, and in France on August 11, 2010. Dominic Cooper, Gemma Arterton, John Hurt, Kayvan Novak, and Robert Sheehan lend their voices to the UK version, while Yuri Lowenthal, Anthony Anderson, Tim Curry, Kathy Griffin, Melanie Griffith, and Jenny McCarthy, along with Pat Carroll, lend their voices to the US version.

The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000) – Morgana

The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea is the second film in the Little Mermaid trilogy and a 2000 animated direct-to-video musical fantasy adventure film created by Walt Disney Television Animation. The premise of the film, directed by Jim Kammerud and Brian Smith, takes place 12 years after the original and revolves around Ariel and Eric’s daughter Melody, a human princess who wishes to swim in the water against her parents’ prohibition.

Many of the original film’s voice performers reprised their roles for the sequel, notably Jodi Benson as Ariel, Kenneth Mars as King Triton, Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, and Buddy Hackett in his final film appearance before his death in June 2003. Carroll, who played Ursula in the original film, reprised her role as Ursula’s sister Morgana, the sequel’s new antagonist. Tara Charendoff replaced Christopher Daniel Barnes as Melody, and Rob Paulsen took over as Prince Eric.

The Little Mermaid (1989) – Ursula

Ursula is a fictional character that emerges as the major antagonist in The Little Mermaid, Walt Disney Pictures’ 28th animated feature picture (1989). Ursula, played by American actress Pat Carroll, is a malevolent sea witch who offers a mermaid princess named Ariel the chance to turn human for three days in order to win Prince Eric’s affection. Ursula, on the other hand, is trying to ruin Ariel’s chances so that she can eventually seize King Triton’s position as ruler of the oceans.
