The opening match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 was played between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Stadium. Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bowl first. Their bowlers managed to restrict the Sri Lankan squad to 105 runs. Bhanuka Rajapaksa was the highest scorer from the Sri Lankan side with 38 runs in 29 balls. Fazalhaq Farooqi took three wickets in the match by bowling for 3.4 overs, in which he conceded a total of 11 runs.
Afghanistan lost only two wickets as they picked up the victory with the help of commendable knocks from openers Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Zazai scored a 28-ball 37 not out while Gurbaz, who is also the Afghanistan team’s wicketkeeper, scored a blistering 18-ball 40, which was laden with three boundaries and four sixes.
Farooqi was declared the man of the match for his match-winning bowling performance.
Despite the results, both teams qualified for the Super 4 where they played against each other once again on September 3. This time, the Dasun Shanaka-led Lankan side managed to exact their revenge and won the match. Sri Lanka won the toss this time and chose to bowl first.
Afghanistan are set to face Pakistan and India on September 6 and 8, respectively. Sri Lanka will also face the two Asian cricket giants. They have a match against India on September 6 and against Pakistan on September 9.
