Teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz scripted history on Sunday, September 11, when he defeated Casper Ruud of Norway 6-4, 2-6, 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 in the men’s singles final of the US Open 2022 to become the new World no. 1. His victory also means that he is now the youngest US Open winner since Pete Sampras in 1990.

It was Alcaraz’s maiden Grand Slam title and he also became the youngest player since Rafael Nadal in 2005 to win one. He demonstrated impressive agility and a vast array of shots at the Flushing Meadows in New York to get the best of Casper Ruud and clinch the US Open title.

The match lasted for three hours and 20 minutes, meaning he has now spent more than 17 hours on the court since the round of 16.

As soon as Alcaraz delivered the victorious shot, he fell on the court in celebration as the spectators roared his name. A few moments later, Alcaraz climbed to the players’ box to meet his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero and the rest of his team and cried while embracing them.

“It is something I have dreamt of since I was a kid. To be No. 1 in the world, to be champion of a Grand Slam, is something I have worked really, really hard (for),” Alcaraz said after the game.

“It is tough to talk right now, I have lots of emotions. This is something I have tried to achieve. All the hard work I have done with my team and my family. I am just 19 years old, all the tough decisions have been with my parents and my team as well. It is something that is really special for me,” he added.

Alcaraz also becomes the fourth Spanish player to become ATP no. 1, following his coach Ferrero, Carlos Moya and Rafael Nadal.
