Amazon Quiz: Which world-famous Indian political and spiritual leader was born on the 2nd of October?
Bhagat Singh
Mahatma Gandhi
Jawaharlal Nehru
B. R. Ambedkar
Answer: Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi, whose real name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was born in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi was trained as a lawyer. It was when he was in South Africa to assist on a case that Gandhi saw the manner in which the Indian migrant workers in the country were treated. The lawyer soon turned into an activist fighting for Indian immigrant workers.
But Gandhi’s struggle had different metrics from the methods of agitation prevalent in the day. He was not in favour of armed resistance or of building on ways that coerce the enemy into submission. Mahatma Gandhi’s method of resistance was based on non-violence and Satyagraha — truth seeking.
These elements gave Gandhi’s politics a spiritual quality. Gandhi’s spirit of non violence was meant to do two things. First, it would take violence off the table on behalf of the persecuted. While this was seen as giving up before a more powerful identity, Gandhi saw that the means too must justify the ends. Second, the idea of Satyagraha came to the fore because the father of the Indian nation thought he could cause a moral awakening within the perpetrator of exploitation.
