Brennand, the San Antonio police officer who shot a 17-year-old boy while he
was eating at a McDonalds parking lot, was arrested on two counts of aggravated
assault, police said on Tuesday. Erik Cantu, the teen who was shot, is unconscious
and on life support, an attorney for his family said, according to an NBC News
report. The attorney further said that Cantu was shot multiple times.

San Antonio
Police Chief William McManus said James Brennand, who was an officer with the
San Antonio Police Department when the shooting occurred, turned himself in
Tuesday and was arrested. Earlier, the San Antonio police chief had fired
Brennand following the shooting. Brennand had joined the San Antonio Police
Department only a few months ago after completing his training at the police
academy and was still on probation when he was fired.

At around
10:45 pm on October 2, Brennand was responding to an unrelated disturbance
call, when he noticed a car, driven by Cantu. Police say the car had evaded
Brennand over a registration that did not meet the description of the car earlier
in the day and upon seeing it at the parking lot, he walked to the car and
abruptly opened the driver’s side door.

Cantu
immediately started the car and attempted to drive away when Brennand shot at
the teen. Cantu was found injured a block away. There was another teenager in
the car, a girl, who was unhurt in the incident.

Brennand
now faces two counts of aggravated assault, because two people were in the car
when the shots were fired, the San Antonio police chief said. Earlier, while
terminating Brennand’s employment with the San Antonio Police Department, McManus
had said: “The former police officer’s actions are indefensible and do not
align with our training, tactics and procedures. As such, I terminated him.”
