Alligator gar are solitary fish that appear to be slow and quiet but are actually fierce ambush hunters. They are opportunistic piscivores that hunt at night and devour a variety of prey, including small mammals that may be floating on the surface and waterfowl. They wait for unwary prey to swim into reach while floating a few feet below the water’s surface. Their double rows of razor-sharp teeth allow them to impale their prey when they rush forward and grasp it with a sweeping motion.

Alligator gar can be found in a wide range of aquatic habitats, but they are most frequently found in reservoirs and lakes in the Southern United States, as well as in the brackish waters of estuaries, bayous, and bays, and the backwaters of lowland rivers. The Gulf of Mexico has occasionally seen them.
