American actor Harrison Ford will make comeback as Indiana Jones in the next installment of the iconic action-adventure franchise. Disney made the announcement on Thursday night, adding that the film is due for release in July 2022. During the virtual presentation, Disney also revealed plans for Star Wars series spin-offs and Marvel series.
"Lucasfilm is in pre-production on the next installment of Indiana Jones. At the helm is James @Mang0ld, director of Ford v Ferrari, and Indy himself, Harrison Ford, will be back to continue his iconic character’s journey. Adventure arrives July 2022," Disney tweeted.
According to a BBC report, Ford, in a 2013 interview, had said that it was "perfectly appropriate" for him to return as the iconic character.
"We've seen the character develop and grow over a period of time and it's perfectly appropriate and OK for him to come back again with a great movie around him," BCC quoted Ford from the 2013 interview.
"To me, what was interesting about the character was that he prevailed, that he had courage, that he had wit, that he had intelligence, that he was frightened and that he still managed to survive. That I can do," Ford had added.
Ford first appeared in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). He next appeared in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, then Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. This was followed by the fourth installment - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in 2008.
