PM Narendra Modi government created a new Ministry of Cooperation in July 2021 with an aim to strengthen the cooperative movement in India. The ministry was handed over to Amit Shah.
In a statement, centre said that the new ministry was being created for realising the vision of 'sahkar se samriddhi’ (through cooperation to prosperity) and will provide separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement India.
"It will help deepen Co-operatives as a true people based movement reaching upto the grassroots. In our country, a Co-operative based economic development model is very relevant where each member works with a spirit of responsibility," the government said in a press release.
"The Ministry will work to streamline processes for ‘Ease of doing business’ for co-operatives and enable development of Multi-State Co-operatives (MSCS). The Central Government has signaled its deep commitment to community based developmental partnership. Creation of a separate Ministry for Co-operation also fulfils the budget announcement made by the Finance Minister," the press release added.
The ministry was created an year after Centre's order to take over the supervision of 1,540 urban and rural cooperative banks through an ordinance. This decision that many parties had resisted, including the NCP and the CPM. Many analysts said that the administrative decision to monitor banks, which handle thousands of crores of rupees, had a tinge of politics.
