Amazon Quiz (September 14, 2021): In which sport did Nethra Kumanan represent India at the 2020 Olympics, the first Indian woman to do so?
The options are:
The correct answer is: Sailing
The Indian sailing team failed to make a mark at the recently-concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Indian sailing team comprised of Varun Thakkar, Ganapathy Chengappa, Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan.
Nethra Kumanan competed in the laser radial event. The other Indian sailor Vishnu Saravanan competed in laser standard class and the pair of Varun Thakkar and Ganapathy Chengappa in 49er class.
This was the first time that four sailors represented India at the Games. This was also the first time India competed at three events.
For the Summer Games, the sailors trained across Europe with the help of the Indian government's Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). Nethra trained in Spain, the duo of Thakkar and Ganapathy trained in Portugal and Saravanan trained in Malta.
In the previous editions, India had only competed in one event while two sailors represented the country on four occasions.
Nethra was also the first Indian woman to qualify for the Games in laser radial class. She booked her berth by competing at the Mussanah Open Championship - an Asian Olympic qualifying event.
Saravanan and the duo of Ganapathy and Thakkar qualified for the Summer Games during the Asian Qualifiers in Oman.
Sararavan finished second in his event and in the 49er class, Chengappa and Thakkar finished on the top.
