According to the official website of the Coconut Development Board, it is a statutory body established by the Government of India for the integrated development of coconut production and utilisation in the country with focus on productivity increase and product diversification.
The body was established on January 12, 1981, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. The headquarters of Coconut Development Board are at Kochi in Kerala and Regional Offices at Bangalore in Karnataka, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Guwahati in Assam and Patna in Bihar. It even has 12 Demonstration cum Seed Production (DSP) Farms across the country.
Recently, Rajya Sabha on July 30, 2021, amended the Coconut Development Board Bill.
As per the amendment, the bill will make the post of the Chairman of the Coconut Development Board a non-executive position, increase the number of members of the Board to six from four, and let Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh nominate their representatives to the Board.
The Board promotes development of the coconut industry, takes measures to help small coconut farmers become beneficiaries and participants in the development of the coconut industry in India and introduces several schemes to increase production, marketing, export, global competition, and promote the health benefits of coconuts.
