American business magnate, producer and film studio executive David Geffen donated $150 to Yale University's School of Drama in June. The largest donation on record in the history of American theater made the the Yale School of Drama only institution of its kind to make tuition free for all degree and certificate students, starting Yale School of Drama was renamed as David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University to honour its donor.
According to Yale University, the school is the only graduate-level professional conservatory in the English-speaking world to offer training in acting, design, directing, dramaturgy and dramatic criticism, playwriting, stage management, technical design and production, and theater management. It enrolls about 200 students across 10 distinct degree and certificate programs.
Some of its former students include actors Meryl Streep, Frances McDormand, Angela Bassett, Paul Giamatti and Lupita Nyong’o, and playwrights David Henry Hwang, Lynn Nottage, and Tarell Alvin McCraney.
Geffen, who taught a course at the university in the late 1970s, is the founder of Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and Geffen Pictures. He is also the co-founder of film studio DreamWorks SKG and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
