4. Sony Computer Entertainment
Mario is a fictional character created by Shigeru Miyamoto, a Japanese video game creator. He is the mascot of the Nintendo video game company and the main character of the Mario video game franchise. Since his creation, Mario has appeared in over 200 video games. His exploits usually revolve around rescuing Princess Peach from the Koopa villain Bowser.
He is depicted as a small, chubby Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario has a range of power-ups available to him that grant him varied powers. Luigi is Mario's fraternal twin brother and sidekick.
Mario originally appears in Donkey Kong (1981), a platform game, as the playable character. Miyamoto originally intended to utilise Popeye as the protagonist, but due to a lack of licencing rights, he instead developed Mario. Miyamoto anticipated the character's unpopularity and intended to utilise him just in cameo appearances; he was initially known as "Mr. Video" before being renamed Mario after Mario Segale.
Mario's appearance and personality were inspired by Donkey Kong's world. Beginning with the critically successful Super Mario Bros. in 1985, he went on to star in the Super Mario series of platform games. Since 1990, Charles Martinet has been Mario's voice actor.
Mario is one of the most well-known video game characters and a well-known pop-culture figure. Mario's picture has appeared on a range of products, including apparel and collectables, and individuals and locations have been given nicknames after him. He has also sparked a significant amount of unauthorised media coverage.
The Mario franchise is the most successful video game franchise of all time, having sold over 600 million units worldwide.
