BMW plans to ramp up the production of its electric vehicles
to 20% of its total cars, Reuters reported on Sunday.

The German carmaker currently has about 8% of its cars in
electric version.

“We are significantly increasing the number of electric
vehicles. Between 2021 and 2023, we will build a quarter of a million more
electric cars than originally planned”, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse told German daily
Augsburger Allgemeine’s Monday edition according to a pre-released version.

By 2023, BMW wants roughly every fifth car it sells to be
powered by an electric engine by 2023, Zipse said.

The executive also spoke about the change in charging
infrastructure that will be needed to support the increase in the number of
cars on roads.

“15,000 private and about 1,300 public charging points would
have to be put into operation every week as of today. Unfortunately, we are a
long way from that”, he told the paper.

With imminent limitations on carbon emission and consequent
government policies, the electric car market is expected to rise in coming
years.
