Mumbai Indians registered their second successive victory in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) season as Sunrisers Hyderabad bottled yet another run chase. Guided by Rahul Chahar’s 3/19 and Trent Boult’s 3/28, the defending champions won by 13 runs.

Chasing 151 runs on the sticky Chepauk wicket, David Warner and company folded at 137 in 19.4 overs. Despite a 67-run foundation laid by Warner (36) and Jonny Bairstow (43), the orange army’s middle-order couldn’t manage 84 runs in 76 balls. Manish Pandey (2), Virat Singh (11), Abhishekh Sharma (2), and Abdul Samad (7) fell for cheap. Vijay Shankar’s 28-run knock in 25 balls was the only significant contribution down the order.

Earlier, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Vijay Shankar took two wickets each to help the Sunrisers Hyderabad restrict Mumbai Indians to 150/5. Mujeeb dismissed Quinton de Kock and Ishan Kishan after Shankar removed skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav. Kieron Pollard’s unbeaten 35 runs off 22 balls boosted the Mumbai total.

While talking about his side’s defeat, David Warner said, “I don’t know how to take that. Obviously disappointing. Two of us were set but it proves that if you don’t bat deep, you can’t win. That was my game-plan, a great piece of fielding from Hardik though. But that’s the game of cricket. These are very much chaseable targets, if you get a partnership and if there is one person at the end, you can chase it down. The guys need to play smart cricket in the middle, the bowlers have been fantastic and this wicket was slower than the previous wickets that.”

Kieron Pollard was named the man of the match. In his post-match address, the Windies skipper spoke about the way the team played according to the situation.
