Jamsetji Tata was born on March 3, 1839, in a small town of Navsari in Gujarat. He was the first and only child of Nusserwanji Tata, who was the scion of a family of Parsee priests. Before this generations of the Tata had joined priesthood, but Nusserwanji broke the shackle and became the first Tata to give tryhis hand at entrepreneurship.
When he was 14, Jamsetji joined his father in Bombay and was enrolled at Elphinstone College. He passed from there in 1858 as a ‘green scholar’, the equivalent of today’s graduate.
In 1868, at the age of 29, Jamshetji started his own trading company with a capital of Rs 21,000. Behind him, he had an experience of nine years where he worked with his father. His first expedition to England soon followed, where he learnt about the textile business.
in 1869, Jamsetji carved his way into textiles in 1869. He acquired an oil mill in Chinchpokli, Bombay, and converted it into a cotton mill.
Two years later, he sold the mill for a significant profit. In 1874, Jamsetji floated a fresh enterprise, the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company, with a seed capital of Rs 1.5 lakh. And it was a start of something big.
From about 1880 to his death in 1904, Jamsetji led by three ideas – setting up an iron and steel company, generating hydroelectric power, and creating a world-class educational institution.
