Cristiano Ronaldo again found the back of the net as Manchester United recorded a 2-1 victory against West Ham United, courtesy of Mark Noble missing a penalty in the stoppage time. Noble, the club captain, was sent on by manager David Moyes to take the penalty after Luke Shaw handled in the area.
However, the midfielder was denied a winner by United goalkeeper David de Gea. The long-serving player retires at the end of the season and had not missed a spot-kick since December 2016.
It was a dramatic end to a thrilling match that saw Jesse Lingard score the winner for United against the club he starred for while on loan last season. The English forward found the back of the net in the 89th minute.
Ronaldo had earlier scored his fourth goal in three matches since returning to United, cancelling out Said Benrahma’s deflected opener for the hosts.
Earlier in the match, the hosts had taken a lead at the half-hour mark with a deflected strike from Said Benrahma. However, United responded only five minutes later in the form of Ronaldo as he headed a Bruno Fernandes cross.
This was the Portuguese international’s fourth goal. He had scored twice on his second debut for Manchester United vs Newcastle United. The other one came in the UEFA Champions League match against Young Boys. The Ole Gunna Solkjaer-coached team lost 1-2.
Ronaldo had also gotten a chance in the second half before Lingard’s strike but his attempt was parried away by Fabianksi. The talisman was also not given a penalty after a challenge from Vladimir Coufal.
In the Premier League standing, Manchester United is placed second with 13 points in five games.
