Emmys 2021: Olivia Colman wins lead actress in drama series for ‘The Crown’

British actress Olivia Colman on Sunday bagged the ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’ awards at the 73rd Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix show ‘The Crown‘.  

The 47-year-old actress dedicated her win to her late father, whom she lost to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m going to be very quick because I’m very teary as my wish my dad was here to see this. I lost my daddy during COVID, and he would have loved all of this,” an emotional Colman said. 

“I would’ve put money on that not happening,” Colman said as she collected the award presented by Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. “What a lovely end to this extraordinary journey with this lovely family. I loved every second of it and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”

Colman took on and defeated fellow ‘The Crown’ star Emma Corin, who portrays Princess of Wales Diana, among other nominees in the category. The other nominees were:

Uzo Aduba, ‘In Treatment’

Elisabeth Moss, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Mj Rodriguez, ‘Pose’

Jurnee Smollett, ‘Lovecraft Country’

Overall, ‘The Crown’ bagged eight awards at the Television Academy, including Outstanding Drama Series. Josh O’Connor and took home the prize for lead actor, while Tobias Menzies, Gillian Anderson bagged the prize for their supporting roles.

The show is created and principally written by Peter Morgan, with each season following the different stages of Queen Elizabeth’s life – from her early years to her time on the throne. 

It has been widely appreciated and acclaimed by both fans and critics. It recently also won the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where it bagged the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series. 

The 73rd Emmy Awards were held on Sunday at the Microsoft Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony was hosted by standup comedian Cedric The Entertainer, who also stars on the CBS show ‘The Neighbourhood’.
