Emmys 2021: ‘Ted Lasso’ wins best comedy series

Apple TV+ show ‘Ted Lasso‘ continued its winning streak at the 73rd Emmy Awards, bagging the award for the Best Comedy Series to cap a successful night on Sunday. The show won a total of seven awards, including wins in the lead actor category for Jason Sudeikis and for his British co-stars Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham for their supporting roles.

The series beat the likes of  ABC’s ‘black-ish’, Netflix‘s ‘Cobra Kai’, ‘Emily in Paris’ and  ‘The Kominsky Method’, HBO Max shows ‘The Flight Attendant’ and ‘Hacks’ as well as Hulu series ‘PEN15’.  

The win comes less than two years after Apple debuted as a streaming service with Apple TV+.

  2. Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Jason Sudeikis
  3. Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Brett Goldstein
  4. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Hannah Waddingham
  5. Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour)
  6. Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Comedy Series
  7. Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series

During his accceptance speech, Sudeikis, who co-created the show, said, “This show’s about families and mentors and teammates, and I wouldn’t be here without those things in my life.”

Thanking his fellow castmates, he said, “I’m only as good as you guys make me look.”

Sudeikis protrays the role of an American football coach, who is hired to coach a soccer team in England, despite having no experience in the sport. The show also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, and Nick Mohammed. 

The 73rd Emmy Awards were held on Sunday at the Microsoft Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. The ceremony was hosted by standup comedian Cedric The Entertainer, who also stars on the CBS show ‘The Neighbourhood’.
