Il Divo star Carlos Marin dies at 53

Classical crossover vocal group Il Divo on Sunday announced that their singer Carlos Marin has died aged 53. 

“It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away. He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There will never be another voice or spirit like Carlos,” the band said, sharing the news on social media.

“For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend. We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love — David, Sebastien and Urs.”

The singer was reportedly taken to a Manchester hospital and admitted in an intensive care unit. The cause of death and the nature of his illness has not yet been revealed.

The group postponed the rest of their tour dates and hoped that Marin would make a recovery. 

“What devastating news! Carlos was such a huge character, his voice magnificent and so key to many of Il Divo’s amazing songs. My sincere condolences to you all. May he rest in peace,” a fan tweeted. 

“Wow can’t believe it. Such terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are with all his friends and family,” another one said.

Marin had been due to perform with his ex-wife Geraldine Larrosa on New Year’s Eve on Spanish state television channel TVE1. The star recorded a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody to be aired during a special on Spanish TV.

“This is so sad. I had the joy of interviewing Carlos and Il Divo many times over the years. He was such a class act. Thoughts with everyone who loved him,” Scottish journalist and television presenter Lorraine Kelly wrote on Twitter. 

“I’m so sorry to hear this. Sending my love and thoughts to you all and of course to Carlos’ family and loved ones,” actor Michael Xavier said.
