Answer: India Meteorological Department

The India Meteorological Department, also known as the IMD, is a government agency that operates under the auspices of India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences. It is the primary agency that is responsible for seismological observations, meteorological forecasts, and meteorological observations. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) runs hundreds of observation stations across India and Antarctica from its headquarters in Delhi. The following cities are home to regional offices: Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Nagpur, and Guwahati in addition to New Delhi.

The International Meteorological Center is also one of the World Meteorological Organization’s six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres. It is in charge of forecasting tropical cyclones in the Northern Indian Ocean region, which includes the Malacca Straits, the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Persian Gulf, as well as giving them names and disseminating warnings about their impending arrival.

Edmond Halley published his treatise on the Indian summer monsoon in the year 1686. In it, he proposed that the seasonal reversal of winds was caused by the differential heating of the Asian landmass and the Indian Ocean. Halley attributed this phenomenon to the fact that the winds would reverse seasonally. The British East India Company was responsible for the establishment of the world’s first meteorological observatories, which were located in India. In 1785, the Calcutta Observatory was established, and in 1796 and 1826, respectively, the Madras Observatory and the Colaba Observatory were established. During the first half of the 19th century, various provincial governments in India established a number of additional observatories, which were located across the country.

IMD became a member of the World Meteorological Organization after independence on 27 April 1949.
