Met Gala 2021: AOC, Carolyn Maloney mix politics with glamour
- AOC's outfit said "Tax the rich"
- Carolyn Maloney backed the Equal Rights Amendment
- Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Lil Nas X also added glam to the red carpet
Met Gala 2021 saw an intersection between glamour and American politics as multiple lawmakers from the United States House of Representatives showed up at the star-studded event and walked down the red carpet.
These included Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Carolyn B. Maloney, both of whom are Representatives from the state of New York.
Carolyn Maloney, who represents New York’s 12th district, showed up at Met Gala 2021 wearing an outfit dripping with politics and activism. Her outfit, which carried white, green and purple shades, called for a smooth passage for the Equal Rights Amendment. The legislation would guarantee legal gender equality for women and men.
Maloney wrote, “Across the country, women’s rights are under attack. I have long used fashion as a force 4 change. As the Met Costume Institute reopens w/ their inaugural exhibit celebrating American designers, I am calling 4 the certification of the ERA so women can be equal once and for all.”
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez showed up at the Met Gala and made yet another political statement. The 31-year-old member of the Democratic party wore a white coloured dress with drapes. The dress carried a red coloured text that read, “Tax The Rich”.

AOC’s bag also had a similar text, following the same theme. The outfit was finished by a pair of red shoes from Brother Vellies, with long laces and bright flowers along the heel, Vogue reported.
On the flip side, celebrities like Billie Eilish, Timothée Chalamet, Lil Nas X also made shining appearances on the red carpet in New York.
Eilish went full glam in a huge peach ball gown at the pandemic-delayed Met Gala on Monday night, while fellow host of the evening Amanda Gorman was breathtaking in blue custom Vera Wang with a diamond laurel wreath in her hair.
Among other walkers were Keke Palmer in a stunning, earth-tone body hugger with a train, while Ilana Glazer took her moment on the steps in feathery long sleeves and a creamy, high-neck gown. Both were hosts of Vogue’s livestream of the gala.
