MTV VMA 2022: Red Hot Chili Peppers to get Global Icon Award and perform

Red Hot Chili Peppers will receive the prestigious Global Icon Award and perform live at MTV VMAs 2022, which airs Sunday, August 28, from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Their new song Tippa My Tongue will premiere on the channel today and is part of the group’s upcoming album Return of the Dream Canteen, slated to release on October 14 on Warner Records.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have won eight VMA awards and return to the show’s stage for the first time in over two decades, having last performed in 2000, when they received the Video Vanguard Award.
Past VMA performances have included the 1992 debut with Give it Away and then a 1995 performance of Warped. In 2000, when receiving the coveted award, the band played Californication.

Their first VMA nomination was in 1990 when the band scored three nods. They were recognized for the cover of Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground, from The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, their third full-length album. The nods were for Breakthrough Video, Best Post-Modern Video, and Best Group Video.
RHCP scored its 29th VMA nomination this year and their first since 2006. Black Summer got the nod in the best rock category. It is the lead from their 12th studio album Unlimited Love. It entered Billboard 200 at No. 1 in April and became the band’s first leader since Stadium Arcadium took the world by storm in 2006.

With their forthcoming album in the pipeline, this marks the first time RHCP has released two albums within less than a 12-month period.
Red Hot Chili Peppers is considered to be one of the most successful bands in rock history and have won six Grammy Awards besides being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
MTV has not yet announced who’ll present the award to RHCP this year.
