Comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres addressed the allegations of the toxic work environment at ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ in her opening monologue of the season. Addressing her virtual audience, Ellen sarcastically said that she had a great summer and added that she is “taking responsibility for what happens at the show.”

“If you’re watching, because you love me, thank you. If you’re watching it because you don’t love me, welcome,” DeGeneres said. She also apologised “to the people who were affected” and admitted that she is in a position of privilege and power and with that comes responsibility.

This is the first time that DeGeneres has publicly addressed the accusation. Earlier, in July, several former employees alleged that they experienced racism and a long-term toxic work environment on the sets. Subsequently, three top producers were fired and an investigation was launched.

DeGeneres also said the show has made “the necessary changes.”

“We have had a lot of conversations over the last few weeks about the show, the workplace and what we want for the future. We have made the necessary changes and today we are starting a new chapter,” she said.

She also addressed the media reports that accused her of not practising the “be kind” motto that she preaches. “The truth is I am that person that you see on TV,” Ellen said.
