Just days after Disney star Jansen Panettiere died at 28 on February 19, his sister, Hayden Panettiere opened up about his cause of death in a tribute.

In a statement to ABC News Monday, the Panettiere family said, “Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications.” They continued, “We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support towards our family as we navigate this unthinkable loss, and ask that we be gifted our privacy during this time of mourning,” the family said. “We love you so much Jansen and you will be in our hearts forever.”

What is enlarged heart?

According to Mayo Clinic, an enlarged heart or cardiomegaly is not a disease in itself but rather a sign of another condition. It can be seen on any imaging test, including a chest X-ray, which prompts doctors to often suggest other tests needed to diagnose the condition that’s causing the enlarged heart.

A number of factors can often cause an enlarged heart. For example, heart damage and certain types of heart disease can cause an enlarged heart. Short-term stress on the body, such as pregnancy, can also cause the heart to grow in size. The condition may be temporary or permanent. It can be treated by medications, medical procedures, or surgery.

Some of the signs of an enlarged heart include shortness of breath, especially while lying flat, waking up short of breath, irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), and swelling (edema) in the belly or in the legs.

It is not known whether Jansen was receiving any treatment for an enlarged heart. He was, however, addicted to painkillers, believed to be Oxycodone. According to multiple sources, Jansen had recovered completely after a stint in rehab last year.
