Darcey Corria, who took home the crown of Miss Wales 2022, was seriously injured in a car crash in Bridgend earlier this week. She is currently receiving treatment in the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

“Event organisers at Miss Wales, as well as her family, are hopeful and confident that she will still be able to do this thanks to the incredible team of medics at UHW and her own personal determination,” a spokeswoman for Miss Wales said, Wales Online reported.

The crash closed part of the M4 for more than three hours.

“We are dealing with a serious road traffic collision which happened on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 motorway between junctions 35 (Pencoed) and 36 (Sarn) which was reported at 6pm this evening. Because of the nature of the collision it has been necessary to close the carriageway completely while investigations have been continuing,” a spokesman for South Wales Police said, Mirror reported.

Who is Darcey Corria?

Darcey Carria is from Barry, a town in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. She is 21 years old. She comes from a mixed Welsh-Caribbean family. She has a white mother and her father is of Jamaican heritage.

She won the title of Miss Wales in May 2022. Carria is due to represent Wales at Miss World, which will be held in May this year.

Darcey, who is the first person of colour to be crowned Miss Wales, has been active in campaigning for black rights.

“I understand the significance and the importance of my crowning moment,” Darcey said, BBC reported.

“I think it’s extremely important for young women living in Wales who are of mixed ethnicity or black or Asian to feel like they are represented in every aspect of life.

“Young women, especially younger girls, will feel that there is somebody that they can relate to in the media which is something that I really struggled with when I was growing up. I really couldn’t relate to anybody,” she added.

Corria has been involved in the Criminal Justice in Wales Anti-Racism Delivery Plan called Together Stronger.

Corria has over 7,000 followers on her Instagram account @darceylaurencorria.
