Who is Timothy Olyphant?

Timothy Olyphant, who has recently been in the news over FX’s announcement of the revival of its critically acclaimed television series ‘Justified’, is an award-winning Hollywood actor who has starred in several notable films and television shows.

Born in Hawaii and a descendant of the prominent Vanderbilt and Olyphant business families, Olyphant was raised in Modesto, California. A pro swimmer and an excellent artist from an early age, Olyphant entered the acting business by happenstance after enrolling in voluntary acting classes.

The budding actor then moved to New York City to learn the tricks of the trade, and in 1995, won the Theatre World Award for his performance in the off-Broadway production, ‘The Monogamist’.

Olyphant’s performance in the theatre circuit took him to Hollywood and he made his feature film debut in ‘The First Wives Club’ (1996). On the day of the film’s release, Olyphant also made his television debut in the pilot episode of the spy thriller series ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’.

The 53-year-old got his big break in 1997, when he starred in the cult horror film ‘Scream 2’. Olyphant went on to appear in supporting roles in several films throughout the late 1990s, and even starred in an episode of famed television series ‘Sex and the City’ in 1998.

Olyphant truly started turning heads later, in the mid-2000s, when his performances in HBO’s critically acclaimed Western drama, ‘Deadwood’, got rave reviews. The actor subsequently starred as the villain opposite Bruce Willis in the 2007 film, ‘Live Free or Die Hard’ (also known as ‘Die Hard 4.0’) and in the film adaptation of a cult video game series, ‘Hitman’ (2007).

Olyphant further built a name for himself through outstanding performances in FX’s television series, ‘Justified’ (2010-2015), performances that saw him nominated for multiple television awards. The 53-year-old also appeared in a supporting role in Season 4 of award-winning television series ‘Fargo’ and in an episode of the popular Star Wars show, ‘The Mandalorian’.

Olyphant is now set to return in his role as US Marshal Raylan Givens in the FX’s new limited series ‘Justified: City Primeval’, although a release date has not yet been announced.
