Stephen Greif, a British actor most known to American viewers for his work on “The Crown,” died on Monday at the age of 78, according to a representative.

The news of his death was announced by his agents at Michelle Braidman Associates on Twitter. The Associates wrote on Twitter, “We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with his family and friends.” The cause of death has not been disclosed yet.

During Season 4 of the popular Netflix drama about Britain’s royal family, the British actor played Speaker of the House Sir Bernard Weatherill.

Who was Stephen Greif?

Stephen John Greif was born on August 26, 1944 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England.  He was an English actor. Greif played Travis in Blake’s 7, Harry Fenning in three seasons of Citizen Smith, Signor Donato in Casanova, and Commander John Shepherd in Shoot on Sight. 

 He is survived by his twin sons Joseph and Daniel.

Greif earned an honours degree from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he also served on the audition panel and won multiple accolades, including Best Actor and Most Promising Actor. He was a member of the National Theatre Company both at the Old Vic in Olivier’s company and on the South Bank for Peter Hall’s company.

Greif was invited back to perform alongside them in the Italian Comedy Saturday, Sunday, Monday at Queen’s Theatre in the West End, where he received a Critics’ Circle Theatre Award nomination for Best Actor. He was asked to re-join the National on the South Bank, working with Peter Hall, in the revival of Death of a Salesman, earning another Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor.

Greif was a prominent actor who had roles in a number of movies, including Gerry, Risen, Woman in Gold, Bill, D is for Detroit, Lasse Hallström’s Casanova, Shoot on Sight, Eichmann, Spartan, The Upside of Anger, Boogie Woogie, and Fakers. Only When I Laugh, Thriller (1 episode, 1976), Howard’s Way, Spooks, Mistresses, He Kills Coppers, Silent Witness, the final episode of Waking the Dead, The Crown, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, Doctors, and New Tricks are just a few of his numerous television appearances.

He died on December 23,2022. The announcement of his death was made by his agents, with cause of death unknown.
