The trend of drinking water from a copper bottle has been catching on in recent times. Homeware makers are now offering a wide variety of copper utensils such as copper mugs and copper jars to follow this trend.

The practice of drinking of water from copper vessels is supported by the indigenous system of Ayurveda and is believed to be followed in ancient times. Though the benefits of this practice are not scientifically proven, people are now switching to it in large numbers.

The following are the benefits thought to be associated with consuming water from a copper vessel:

1. Anti-bacterial effects

The term “contact killing” is often used to describe copper’s antibacterial effect. According to researchers, exposure to the mineral kills bacteria by damaging their cell wall. It is especially effective against bacterias E.coli and S.aureus, which can cause severe illnesses in the human body.

2. Helps the digestive system function efficiently

Copper helps cleanse and detox one’s stomach, regulate the working of the liver and kidneys, ensuring proper elimination of waste and effective absorption of nutrients from food. The mineral can thus act as a remedy against ulcers and indigestion.

3. Heal wounds faster

Copper helps strengthen the immune system and aid in the production of new cells. It also has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

4. Functions as an anti-oxidant

Copper is packed with anti-oxidant and cell forming properties. It can thus help the formation of fine lines.

5. Helps maintain a healthy heart

Copper is also known to help maintain a healthy heart by helping regulate blood pressure, and keep the heart rate steady.

6. Anti-inflammatory properties

The mineral also helps relieve aches and pains caused due to inflamed joints. Arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients can therefore follow this practice.

7. Boosts melanin production

Copper is integral to the production of melanin (a pigment that is present in the skin and gives it colour) in our bodies.

8. Regulates working of thyroid gland

The thyroid gland is responsible for the production of hormones that control metabolism. Copper is believed to help the gland play its role effectively.

As a trace element, copper thus offers several benefits that help our body function efficiently. Drinking water from a copper vessel thus can aid the multiple processes involved.
