India records 55, 721 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours

  • 579 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours
  • There are 772,055 active cases in the country
  • On January 30, India reported its first case of novel coronavirus

India on Monday recorded 55,721 new cases of COVID-19, taking the tally to 7,550,273, the Ministry of Health’s data released on Saturday showed.

579 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s death toll due to COVID-19 to 114610.

There are 772,055 active cases in the country, while 666,3608 have recovered.

According to the ministry of health, India’s active cases have fallen below 8 lakh after 6 weeks and continue to slide further down. 22 States/UTs have less than 20,000 active cases, and only 3 are reporting more than 50,000 active caseload.

A total of 9,50,83,976 samples were tested for COVID19 till October 18. Of these, 8,59,786 samples were tested on Sunday said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).  

On January 30, India reported its first case of novel coronavirus and has now emerged as the second worst-hit nation, after the United States. The US has reported over eight million cases and 218,556 deaths, as per John Hopkins University’s tally.

The first-ever case of SARS-CoV-2, also known as novel coronavirus, that causes COVID-19, was reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, in December, last year. Since then, the virus has globally infected over 39 million people and killed more than 1.1 million of them.
