India records over 200,000 COVID-19 cases, second day in a row

  • 1,185 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours
  • 1,74,308 people have died of the disease till now

India on Thursday recorded 217,353 new COVID-19 cases, the Union Health Ministry’s data released on Friday showed. This has pushed the country’s total tally to reach 1,42,91,917. 1,185 deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 1,74,308.

There are 15,69,743 active cases in the country, while 1,25,47,866 have recovered.

263,476,625 samples have been tested for the novel coronavirus till April 15. This includes 1,473,210 samples tested on Thursday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.

India started its mass vaccination drive against coronavirus on January 16. … people have received at least one dose of the two COVID-19 vaccines, Covaxin and Covishield, approved by India. 

Covaxin is the indigenous vaccine, developed by Bharat Biotech. Covaxin is AstraZeneca/Oxford jab, being manufactured at Pune’s Serum Institute.
