India registers 88,600 COVID-19 cases in 24 hours

With 88,600 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 tally reached 5,992,533 on Sunday, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The country is just a few cases away from reaching the six-million mark after Friday’s tally.

A total of 94,503 people have died due to the disease so far, with reports of 1,124 of them giving in to coronavirus on Saturday. India however has one of the lowest death rates among countries worst-affected by the infection.

Since the pandemic hit India, a total of 4,941,628 people have recovered from the disease or have been discharged, health ministry data suggests. Currently, there are 956,402 active cases in the country.

According to the Indian Centre of Medical Research, 71,257,836 samples tested up to September 26. Of these, 987,861 samples were tested over the past 24 hours.

India has emerged as the second-worst hit nation by COVID-19. The United States remains the worst-hit country, with over seven million cases and more than 200,000 deaths, as per the tally by John Hopkins University.

Since the coronavirus outbreak was first reported in December, last year in China, the disease has infected over 32 million people worldwide and killed nearly a million of them.
