India reports 44,877 COVID19 cases in last 24 hours, positivity rate drops to 3.17%

India reported 44,877 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the data updated by the health ministry on Sunday.

With this, the country’s active cases reach 5,37,045, comprising 1.26% of the total caseload. 

The daily positivity rate has dropped marginally from 3.48% to 3.17%. 

At least 4,15,85,711 people have now recovered from the disease with the latest addition of 1,17,591 recoveries in a single day. This has pushed the recovery rate of the country to 97.55%.

Citing significant improvement in the COVID-19 situation, the Election Commission on Saturday further relaxed pandemic-induced restrictions on the upcoming assembly poll campaign in five states. 

Meanwhile, omicron is now the dominant variant behind COVID-19 cases in the country, the government said in a press conference in early February this year.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23 last year.
