Moderna, which has claimed that its coronavirus vaccine is almost 95% effective, will charge governments from $25 to $37 per dose depending on the amount ordered, the company’s chief executive Stephane Bancel told a German weekly.

“Our vaccine, therefore, costs about the same as a flu shot, which is between $10 and $50,” Bancel said, quoted Welt am Sonntag (WamS).

According to Reuters, the European Commission wanted to reach a deal with the pharma company for the supply of millions of does of its coronavirus vaccine candidate for a price below $25 per dose, said an EU official. The EU has been in talks with Moderns for its vaccine since July.

“Nothing is signed yet, but we’re close to a deal with the EU Commission. We want to deliver to Europe and are in constructive talks,” Bancel told WamS. The chief executive said that it was just a “matter of days” until a contract would be ready.

Based on the interim data from a late-stage clinical trial, Moderna said that its vaccine is 94.5% effective in preventing COVID-19, after Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said that their vaccine candidate is nearly 95% effective.
