US reports more than 1 million single day COVID cases, breaks global record
- The previous record was nearly half the cases and set just days ago
- Outside US, India has recorded the highest number of single day cases
- Several states in US have also observed a surge in hospitalisation rates
United States set a global record on Monday by registering more than 1 million cases of COVID-19 in a single day as omicron has continued to burden American healthcare facilities. The previous record was set just days ago, however, the number was much lower.
The number is also two times more than the case count seen anywhere else across the globe since the pandemic began. India holds the record for registering the highest COVID cases outside the United States. India recorded about 414,000 cases on May 7 last year when the delta variant was at its peak.

However, reports from USA Today suggest that the number reflecting on Johns Hopkins University tally includes backlogged cases as all states had not sent in the numbers from a day before.
The post-holiday surge of COVID in the country has turned up the pressure on authorities and the American healthcare system. Oregon reported more than 9,700 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday and smashed a previous record for weekly coronavirus cases with an average of about 2,400 new daily cases as the omicron variant took hold.
Hospitalisation rates have also spiked in some areas of the country. The Health Department of Mississippi reported that 695 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were hospitalized Sunday. That is up from 265 hospitalized two weeks earlier, on December 19th.

Arizona health officials on Monday reported the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in a year. The 14,192 new cases were the most ever tallied in a day except for January 3, 2020, when more than 17,000 cases were counted.
The state Health Services Department said the new case count was boosted by lower than normal reporting on Sunday, when just 701 new cases were reported. However, the state said there has been a steep upward trend of cases in recent days.
