12 hour journey: Everything to know about new Mumbai-Delhi expressway
- The Mumbai-Delhi Expressway is being developed at a cost of RS 98,000 crore
- It is expected to shorten the distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 130 km
- The expressway is planned to be completed by March 2023
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that once the 1,380 kilometres long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is constructed, the travel between the two metros will be reduced to 12.5 hours. As of now, a road trip between India’s political and financial capital takes about 22:30 hours.
Gadkari will be reviewing the progress of the expressway that will cover states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
According to the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, the expressway will connect urban centers of the national capital through the corridor’s Delhi-Faridabad-Sohna section along with the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai. The expressway is planned to be completed by March 2023.

“Being developed at a cost of 98,000 crores, the 1,380 kilometres long Delhi Mumbai expressway will be the longest expressway in India. It will enhance connectivity between Delhi and Mumbai. The expressway will connect the urban centres of Delhi through the Delhi-Faridabad-Sohna section of the corridor along with a spur to Jewar Airport and Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Mumbai through a spur in Mumbai,” as per the official release by the ministry,
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (DME) key features:
– The expressway is expected to shorten the distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 130 km.
– It will have 3 animals and 5 overpasses. A combined length of 7 km will dedicated for unencumbered wildlife movement.

– The DME will generate annual fuel savings of more than 320 million litres. In doing so, it will educe CO2 emissions by 850 million kg.
– The DME will include two eight lane tunnels, one through Mukundra sanctuary and the second through the Matheran eco-sensitive zone.
– DME has created employment for thousands of trained civil engineers and more than 50 lakh man days of work.
