Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to Argentinian football legend Maradona who died of cardiac arrest in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. He was 60.

“Diego Maradona was a maestro of football, who enjoyed global popularity. Throughout his career, he gave us some of the best sporting moments on the football field. His untimely demise has saddened us all. May his soul rest in peace,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Earlier in November, Maradona had undergone a surgery for a brain clot. He had celebrated his 60th Birthday on October 30 and had showed up that night for Gimnasia’s national championship match against Patronato, which his team won 3-0.

Maradona had a history of drug and alcohol abuse and poor health, and was often in and out of hospitals.
