The Ausgram assembly constituency is currently held by TMC
MLA Abhedananda Thande who defeated Basudev Mete of the Communist Party of
India (Marxist) in 2016. The seat, one of West Bengal’s 294 assembly
constituencies, falls under the Bolpur Lok Sabha constituency.

The constituency, which is located in the Purba Bardhaman
district of West Bengal, is reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
Over 80% of the population in Ausgram is rural.

The seat had been a CPI-M stronghold, till the Trinamool
Congress
won the seat in the 2016 assembly elections. Before this, the CPM had
won the seat in every state poll since 1967. The constituency has been reserved
for the SC since 1962.
